Kids learn to become more self-reliant as they explore their interests and discover their strengths and weaknesses. They learn to trust their inner voice instead of depending on a parent or teacher to tell them what to do. Independence is vital to becoming a self-sufficient adult.
Outdoor Activities
Summer camp provides a unique opportunity for children to make new friends, learn new skills, and gain independence. It also helps children to develop social, emotional, and physical skills, as well as enhance their self-confidence and self-esteem.
Prolonged exposure to silty river water and sand can lead to uncomfortably dry skin, so apply a thick lotion or salve to your heels and soles of your feet as needed. Consider preventively treating the areas between your toes with Tinactin or a similar topical cream, then throw on a pair of socks and camp shoes.
It's important to know a child's personality and identify what camp programs will benefit him or her most. With a variety of programs and activities, summer camp offers fun and meaningful adventures to match a child's interests and maturity level. Be certain to include your child in the decision-making process.
Fleeces and softshells make excellent mid-layers, especially if they're breathable to wick away moisture. On milder days, these can be worn as an outer layer. A waterproof jacket is perfect as an outer layer, as it'll keep you warm and stop water soaking through to your other layers.

Hiking, biking, or even a day at the pool swimming can be great fun and excellent preparation for your rafting trip. Paddle Together: If possible, rent a canoe or a kayak and spend a day on the water. It's a great way to practice paddling, get a feel for water dynamics, and enjoy time together as a family.
Put lighter items on the top of your pack and in the lid that you may need access to while you're hiking, including first aid, snacks, a rain jacket, sunscreen etc. Fill out your pockets with water bottles, tent poles, snacks, pack cover, bathroom kit and other lightweight items you'll want to grab quickly

Try to do some walking that mimics the conditions you will experience on your trek as closely as you can. Also don't forget that hills are your friend! The more you practice on hills, the more prepared you'll be for your trek, especially if you're trekking in the mountains. The same goes for stairs.
Camp provides children with a community of caring adults who nurture experiential education that results in self-respect and appreciation for human value. All of the outcomes — self-identity, self-worth, self-esteem, leadership, and self-respect — build personal competencies.
