5 Things to Pack for Summer Day Camp
1. Lunch and snacks
Daily packing should include a nutritious lunch that can be kept fresh with ice packs, as most camps do not have the refrigeration space to store lunches. Kids will be busy during camp and need that extra boost of energy at lunchtime! Ask if the camp has a nut-free policy or if there are any restrictions on what foods campers can bring due to allergies. Also, some camps provide meals and/or snacks, or offer options for purchasing lunches ahead of time from a vendor who delivers to camp.
2. Sunscreen
Parents should apply sunscreen or help their camper put on sunscreen before coming to camp, but kids may also need to reapply sunscreen later in the day if activities are taking place outside. Sunscreen should be labeled as “broad-spectrum” and have a minimum SPF of 15 and be reapplied every two hours after swimming.
3. Clothing and items for play & swim
Campers should come dressed in comfortable clothes for both indoor and outdoor fun, and possibly for water play or the pool if your camp program includes those activities. Sneakers are best but campers should also pack water shoes or shoes that can get wet if they’ll be swimming or enjoying water activities, and don’t forget to include a towel and change of clothes! It’s also a good idea to pack a waterproof or plastic bag for wet or dirty clothing.
4. Refillable water bottle
It’s important for kids to stay hydrated throughout the day, especially on hot days. Here are some recommendations on the best water bottles for kids.
5. Face masks
Campers ages 2 and up will need to wear face coverings, per NJ guidelines, when indoors and when social distancing can’t be maintained. It’s also a good idea to pack an extra face mask in case the other one gets damaged or lost.
